Our Verdict

Editor’s note: The following review is part of Macworld’s GemFest 2013. Every day (except Sunday) from mid-July until late September, the Macworld staff will use the Mac Gems blog to briefly cover a standout free or low-cost program. Learn more about GemFest in this Macworld podcast. You can view a list of this year’s apps, updated daily, on our handy GemFest page, and you can visit the Mac Gems homepage for past Mac Gems reviews.

If you’re the kind of person who gets sick of looking at the same old thing every day—including your computer interface—then Flavours 1.0.12, a program that lets you apply, create, and share creative Mac OS X themes, will get your blood pumping.

Flavours (yes, European spelling) is no ordinary icon enhancer. It is a full-on theme replacer that opens to a gallery and online repository where you can both download and publish your own original themes. The app does not modify your icons; it layers themes on menus, controls, windows, desktops, and buttons. You can survey available themes in groups such as Top Rated, Most Popular, and Latest, and the main window lets you sample interface changes.

Right-click on a theme to get more details about it, open a new window for a Quick Look, add a favorite, create a new theme, or flag a selection as inappropriate.

When you choose a flavor, you can use the program’s checkboxes to customize it. For changes to take effect, you log out and then log back in—a good precaution against accidents.

Choosing from available themes is only half the fun. Flavours also lets you create your own themes—using existing themes as templates or starting from scratch. Theme creation can be challenging, as there are many decisions to make, down to the offset and blur on a window’s inner shadow. If you create something you think is worthy of sharing, the program facilitates that, too.

At this writing, there’s a somewhat confusing requirement to create a Flavours Store account in addition to purchasing a software license to enable some of the program’s functions. However the developers have stated their intention to remove this requirement in upcoming versions.

Flavors has lots of elegant Mac-like touches that make the app shine and I like that the finished themes don’t go too far—even though I found a few of them hard to navigate. It also would have been nice to have descriptions of all the themes, instead of only the featured ones.

From shampoo to lipstick and other makeup products, you probably use beauty products on a daily basis. And, the cost of those products each month can really add up.

According to statistics, the amount women as a collective spend on cosmetics each year is around $426 billion.

And, the average woman will spend about $15,000 on beauty products throughout her life.

That’s pretty substantial.

But, what if you could get some of your beauty products for free?

One of the main ways that beauty brands increase the visibility of their products is through reviews.

Brands know that people trust reviews from their peers.

For example, if a friend, or a blogger tells you a product is great, then you’re more likely to try it, than if someone in an advert for the product tells you it’s great.

And, best of all, in order to get reviews from customers, brands are willing to give out products for free!

Most of the time, you will need your own blog, or at a least an online platform, where you can post your reviews.

23. BzzAgent

BzzAgent is a word of mouth product marketing website. Essentially, it sends out free products, including beauty products, for you to review.

Once you’ve signed up and told the site about your preferences, you’ll be matched with products, and be sent an invite via email.

The site suggests you accept your invite ASAP, as samples are limited. After you’ve accepted the invite, you’ll get your free beauty sample within a week or two from the ship-date.

You’ll then need to write a review.

E. Other Places to Get Free Beauty Products

In addition to beauty brands, stores and review sites, there are also a few other ways that you can get beauty products, which you might not have considered.

29. Social Media

Does

Following your favorite beauty brands on social media sites, like Facebook and Twitter is a great way to get your hands on some free products.

30. Write to Companies

Did you know that you can get free beauty products from companies (no purchase necessary,) just by asking them? It’s true.

Back in 2006, Tom Locke conducted what he called the “$39 Experiment”. For this experiment, Locke wrote to 100 companies asking them for stamps – this cost him just $0.39 for the stamps.

He ended up with $272.93 worth of free stuff!

And, ten years later this trick still works!

Start by compiling a list of beauty brands you like. Then write a letter.

The letter should:

  • Express how much of a fan you are of their products.
  • State your personal experience with the company’s products in the past, e.g. “Whenever I use your mascara I get compliments on my eyelashes”
  • State that you are a loyal customer and would like to try more of the brand’s products.

If you don’t want to send letters, then you could email companies instead. But, letters generally suggest to a brand that you value its products enough to take the time to write them a letter.

So, usually, you’ll have more success sending a letter than an email.

You won’t get free products from every company that you write to, but from many of them you will.

31. Beauty/Cosmetic Testing Panels

Did you know that beauty companies use consumers to test out new products?

It’s true – brands like L’Oréal need want feedback from real consumers who actually use their products.
